I love cookbooks and I’ve amassed quite a collection. I love buying one at a local restaurant while I’m on vacation. When I’m feeling particularly uninspired in the kitchen, I’ll pull out a few and flip through them looking for inspiration. However, there are three of my favorite southern cookbooks that I always come back to.
In my opinion, the best recipes are easy and consistent. I love the occasional experimentation, but I love to find a recipe that I’ll come back to again and again because of its simplicity and reliability.
My Favorite Southern Cookbooks
I love trying new foods from different cultures and countries. However, being born and raised in Georgia, Southern food will always be my go-to for comfort food and special occasions. Here are my three favorite southern cookbooks.
Cheryl Day is pretty much a legend in Savannah. She and her husband, Griffith, started Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah in 2002. Aside from the most perfect and charming vintage aesthetic, Back in the Day serves up some of the best baked goods I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. Their sandwiches are to die for.
The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook has easy to follow recipes. I made the Bourbon Pecan Pie recipe for Chris’s birthday and it was perfect. This is my go-to cookbook for baked goods.
Chris and I love to take weekend trips to Charleston. We’ll plan a trip around a show at Charleston City Music Hall (one of our favorite venues) and spend the weekend perusing King Street. There is one little storefront that is guaranteed to have a line out of the door, regardless of when you might be there. That little store is Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. Biscuits are obviously the focus at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, but in Callie’s Biscuits & Southern Traditions, Carrie Morrie (daughter of Callie) shares intimate family stories and recipes. I recommend this book to anyone who grew up on the coast in the south. The A Cup A Cup A Cobbler is delicious and easy— a perfect summer dessert. And yes, the famous biscuit recipe is in there, too!
The Southerner’s Cookbook is a compilation of southern recipes and stories from all over the south compiled by the editors of Garden & Gun magazine. As you might expect, the photographs in this book are spectacular. The Southerner’s Cookbook is fantastic for anyone looking for simple recipes that will wow. From delicious Bacon Crackers to delicious Pickapeppa Pecans (I gave these away as Christmas gifts for neighbors this year), the appetizers section is my favorite part of this book. The recipes are wide in variety. You are sure to find something to fit your needs! This cookbook would make a fantastic wedding gift.
